  • My wife and I moved to Portland from Pennsylvania and found White Pine by searching for a local church in the area. We have found a new home at White Pine. We have made so many friends through the church and a strong support system. We found the teaching solid and the people friendly. The music is contemporary and found many opportunities to get involved.

  • The service is currently being held in the Greely Middle School gym and after attending about 7 or 8 Sundays, I couldn't get a sense of whether this is permanent or if the church service is being held there while a more permanent solution is being sought. The seating is awful and because it is on one level, if someone taller than you sits anywhere in front of you, you cannot not see the words to songs on the screen. You can sit on the bleachers in the back but there is no back support. I'm hoping this is only temporary.
There is a good mix of generations in the congregation which I believe indicates a healthy church mix.
The worship team is very talented but there was only one occasion when I knew any of the contemporary worship music. This has frustrated my husband so much that he does not want to go back. He often said that he would look around and not see anyone else singing which he attributes to the fact that no-one else seems to know the music either.
The pastor can be comically self-deprecating and is a talented speaker.

We were quite disappointed that after attending coffee hour on many of these 7 or 8 Sundays, that no-one came up and talked with us and any efforts on my part to try to get someone's attention to say "hello" were futile. This has left us feeling that we are not part of a church community which is what we are looking for. I did fill out a card asking that someone contact me and after 2 weeks, a woman in the women's ministry did and asked if I wanted to meet. I responded to that but, disappointingly, I never heard back from her.
I vacillate between a 3 and 4 star rating based on the above observations but have edged more for a 4 because they have a mixed-generation congregation, they are contemporary in their worship style (moving with the times, unlike most Maine churches) and, most importantly, the church seems to be led by the holy spirit.
